Makeup & Wigs

From Miitopia Central

Makeup & Wigs (Japanese: メイクとウィッグ Meiku to Wiggu; Makeup and Wig), also known as Wigs and Makeup in EU English, is a feature in the Nintendo Switch version of Miitopia. This menu is accessible either from the "Mii characters" menu on the title screen and then picking an existing Mii or from the overworld menu accessible using the X button.

Makeup[edit]

Applying Eyelash makeup on a Mii.

The Makeup (Makeup Counter in EU English) is applied to the Mii's face. Makeup consists of various pre-made graphics or basic shapes that can be applied to any Mii facial part. A makeup part can be enlarged/shrunk or rotated. Makeup also uses layering which allows the player to arrange the visibility order of each makeup part. Certain makeup parts that come in pairs can be edited separately from each other via "Edit One Side". Depending on the category, the makeup will behave along with the Mii's facial animations. For example, if a Mii's eyes can have their pupils shift to the sides, then any makeup part applied in the Eye category will follow along the pupil movement. However, most of the time, makeup parts disappear when the Mii displays expressions that change his/her eyes or mouth into a non-neutral state. Accessing a makeup category also adds certain instruments to the background music. Up to 100 makeup parts can be applied on a Mii.

The following table lists all the makeup categories, except for Other, which is detailed after the table.

Name Mii facial part Placement Unique behavior Applied in pairs? Edit One Side Instrument
Eye Eyes Over eye pupils Follow pupil movement Yes Allowed Chiptune
Eyelash Eyes One layer over Mii eyes - Yes Allowed Woodwinds
Eye shadow Eyes One layer under Mii eyes - Yes Allowed Drums, plus a pronounced beat
Blush Face surface Over face surface as texture Remains visible on a Faceless Mii Yes Not allowed Brass
Lipstick Mouth One layer under Mii mouth - No N/A Whistles
Eyebrow Eyebrows Over Mii eyebrows Follow eyebrow movement, default Mii Maker eyebrows can be removed via "Delete Mii Brows" Yes Allowed Synths

Makeup parts belonging to Other are divided further into subcategories. When the Other category is accessed, the background music adds in steel drums regardless of which subcategory is accessed. The following lists the makeup subcategories under Other:

  • Mask parts are placed over any Mii facial part except for the nose.
  • Sticker parts are placed under all Mii facial features.
  • Glasses parts are placed over Mii glasses. These parts can not be applied if the Mii does not wear glasses from the Mii Maker. Once applied, however, the player may remove the default Mii Maker glasses via "Remove Mii Glasses". This makeup part appears in twos when applied, but they can not be edited separately, much like the Blush.
  • Foundation changes the color of the Mii's head independent of his/her chosen skin color in the Mii Maker.
  • Nose color changes the color of the Mii's nose independent of his/her chosen skin color in the Mii Maker.
  • Eye color changes the color of the Mii's eyes independent of his/her chosen eye color in the Mii Maker. This also allows the player to edit each eye separately from the other.

The player may test how the applied makeup plays with the Mii's expressions by viewing them via Check Expression.

Makeup will not appear on Mii characters featured in the Quizmaster's "Who Is It?" questions. Makeup parts are not displayed on party member-based or Travelers' Hub quest client-based monsters when viewed on the Journal.

Wigs[edit]

Modifying the back part of a Mii's wig.

The wigs (Wig Shop in EU English) are a Mii's head decoration separate from the Mii's default Mii Maker hairstyle. A wig consists of the bangs, the back, and the cowlick. A wig will always have bangs and back parts, but the cowlick is optional. Wigs can be customized by editing their hue, saturation, or brightness. If a wig's back style includes hair decorations, their color can be customized as well.

Unlike the default hair, wigs are animated in relation to the motion the wig-wearing Mii makes. Wigs are also treated as a head wear, so they will not be affected by the Aging effect, which turns the affected Mii's hair to gray. Because of this too, a wig-wearing party member will not wear his/her hat unless the wigs are removed. The player has the option to limit wigs to just when the party is staying at inns or going for outings by enabling "Wear at Inns/On Outings" in the Wigs menu's Settings.

If the wig wearer is a Tank, his/her wigs will not be worn during battles, though an oversight results in this not applicable to guest party members with this job. Another unique restriction is placed on certain Mii Cast characters, which depending on their role, may disallow wigs.

A random wig is generated on a Mii during a Makeover event at the inn or stable, unlike in the Nintendo 3DS version where random Mii Maker hair and color are generated.

Trivia[edit]

  • The makeup and wigs' appearance on the Mii characters tend to be inconsistent regardless of setting outside of the intended purpose.
    • Travelers' Hub quest givers based on non-Traveler Mii Cast characters (for example, the Worried Explorer) become unmodified when their icon is shown on the quest completion screen.
    • When obtaining new weapons/clothes from quests, inactive party members' makeup, though not the wigs, are absent in the giveaway menu.
    • On the Villa's "New friend" screen, all icons of the inn-staying Mii characters are shown without makeup and wigs.
